Prepping for Quizam (Friday)

1. Organize your notes (use sticky notes to make it easier to access them).
2. Make sure you have outlined Ch. 6 by tomorrow.
3. Some topics that will be covered on the quizam:

• Origin/types of colonies (key people, key events, key trade items)
• Triangle trade
• French and Indian War
• Taxation Issues with Britain (Salutary Neglect, new taxes, Stamp Act, etc)
• Declaration of Independence and Reasons for Revolution
• Key Revolutionary events

No HW Tonight

There is no HW tonight.

Propaganda Poster

Declaration of Independence

1. Translate the two sentences we read in class (the most important and second most important sentences in American history). They must be in your own words (and NOT what it says in the margin). What do these sentences mean to YOU? How do you feel about them? Why?

2. Make an argument that either supports or refutes this statement: The purpose of government is to protect basic rights. You should have your introductory paragraph plus one or two supporting paragraphs.

Weekend HW Plus INFO--READ CAREFULLY!

1. HW that was due for today (Friday) will be checked on Monday.

2. Reminder: Star Wars Mini-Project is due on Monday (and you may NOT use a HW pass to get out of it).

3. Weekend HW (you MAY use a HW pass for this, BUT it will eventually have to be turned in before your final):

Quotation work:

Take the quotation you agree with the most, and make an argument for why it is correct. Begin to write an essay proving your point. However, you may NOT use personal pronouns. Please type this up and have a minimum of 3 paragraphs. You will be graded on thesis statement, and support points.

French & Indian War/Taxation

Use your book/outline to help you answer the following questions:

A. Summarize the reasons for the French/Indian War.

B. What was the outcome of the War?

C. What were some of the direct reasons for new taxes being imposed on the Colonists?

D. What were the most egregious (look it up) taxes imposed on the colonists? Why? (Make an argument)

Colonial Homework

Try your hand at the questions on pages 134-135.

• Complete 1-11 in your spirals.
• For #10, also answer this question: c) The free enterprise system certainly benefitted many individuals during the colonial period, but not everyone. Who/what groups did it hurt and why? Provide examples.
• For #11-- you might have to look up "milestone" to understand the question. Try your hand at it.

Outlining, part 2

1. If you HAVE NOT finished your outline for Chapters 3-5, please try again this evening. This time use the new information. Please follow the same time rule (no more than 30 minutes per chapter).


2.If you HAVE finished outlining the chapters then outline Chapter 6 tonight. Follow the same time consideration (30 min/chapter), but see if you can get the outlining concept correctly.

Please DO USE the handouts to help your process.

STAR WARS

Please view your Star Wars episode and complete the analysis prior to Monday Nov. 20.

Outline Due Monday

The outline for Chapters 3-5 is due Monday.

Remember, don't spend more than 30 minutes on each chapter.

TEST TUESDAY

• Please study for your Ideology exam. It is scheduled for Tuesday Nov. 7th.
• You must know the meanings of all the words on the list.
• Be able to identify cow analogies and make cow analogies.
• Be able to write persuasively about ideologies (and other words).
• Be able to discuss the differences between similar ideologies.
• We will review in class Monday.

Expect the exam to take the whole period. It is worth 100 points.

Polybius Cycle

Please record all answers in your spiral:


1. Finish up your journal topic about Fairness/Efficiency if you have not.
2. Now that you have seen Polybius' cycle, answer the following questions:

• How does this compare to what you predicted?
• Do you agree with his cycle? Why or why not?
• Try to find some proof either way. Proof may come from your history book (thinking about our country) or encyclopedia (thinking about other countries).

Cycle of Government

Polybius said governments necessarily follow a cycle:

• Predict the cycle using the ideologies on your vocab page.
• (hint: use only ideologies with Greek etymology)
• Which gov't type would be first? What would it go to next? Would there be other types to follow? When/why would it go back to the first type?
• Why do you think his cycle is this way?
